What is meningitis?

  • Meningitis is an uncommon but serious disease caused by different types of germs
  • The disease can cause serious health problems in people, such as an infection in the brain and spinal cord, hearing loss, loss of a limb, and even death
  • Meningitis germs spread through close personal contact, such as kissing, coughing, and sneezing
  • Meningitis is most commonly diagnosed in infants, young children, teens, and young adults
What is meningitis?

Research studies, also known as clinical trials, may help doctors and scientists learn about possible new ways of treating and helping to prevent disease in people, including potential new vaccines. Today, there are 2 separate vaccines that help protect against the 5 major groups of germs that cause meningitis.

The goal of the doctors and scientists in the QUINTET Research Study is to learn

  • whether the investigational, combination study vaccine (called MenABCWY) is safe and helps protect against 5 different types of meningitis germs
  • how well an approved meningitis B vaccine (called Bexsero) helps protect against the meningitis B germ when given as either 2 doses or 3 doses
  • how safe this investigational combination study vaccine is when compared with the 2 vaccines currently used

More than 3,500 children and young adults will participate in this study at sites around the world. You or your child may be able to join them.

You may be able to participate in the QUINTET Research Study if you*

  • are between the ages of 10 and 25 years old
  • have never received a vaccine for meningitis A, B, C, W, and Y

*Additional eligibility criteria apply.
